Blessing Okagbare banned from participating at Rio 2016 Olympics
Guardian reports that Okagbare was Team Nigeria’s medal hope at the IAAF Championship in Beijing but she fumbled in the 100m final, finishing last, and also failed to show up for the 200m event four days later, despite appearing in the warm up area. She claimed injury and while some Nigerians were yet to come to terms on what transpired in Beijing, there was a shocker a few days ago, when Okagbare announced she will not be representing Team Nigeria for the 11th All Africa Games in Congo, an action which AFN and NSC finds unpatriotic.

Ebola: Lagos rejects Sierra Leone AFCON tie
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) agreed to stage the match after the Sierra Leoneans were banned from hosting international matches because of Ebola, africanFootball.com reports.
The NFF accordingly received a clearance from the ministry of health for the game to be played at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.
“Lagos government is not comfortable for the match to be played in Lagos. The government doesn’t want to take risks. The officials argued that they have lost a lot of money and top personalities on account of the Ebola scourge,” africanFootball.com quoted a Lagos-based sports editor as saying on the matter.
“So, Lagos will not stage the match between Sierra Leone and Cote d’Ivoire.”
There are now strong indications the match will now be played in Port Harcourt after the NFF opened discussions with the Rivers State Government.
“They have opened talks with the Rivers State Government for the match to now be played in Port Harcourt,” an official said.

Nigeria’s first IVF baby to study medicine abroad
Hannatu Kupchi, 17,was born at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja on February 11, 1998.
A ceremony was organised by the hospital on Sunday in Abuja to mark her departure. Medical Director Dr. Ibrahim Wada said Kupchi’s birthday marked the fulfillment of his medical career.
“It is very difficult to make a statement on a day like this. When I was out of this country, I knew there were people who wanted babies. I made the decision to come back to Nigeria to help people. It happened on February 11, 1998 when this historic event occurred at this hospital.
“The baby of that historic day is going to become a doctor. Because the parents stood firm, we were able to help others. You gave us government recognition and that was important. It was the first time that a minister came to receive a baby in Nigeria.
I want to assure you (Hannatu),that after graduation, there is an automatic employment for you. .”
Kupchi expressed gratitude to the hospital for giving her “a life”.
She said what informed her choice of study was the desire to help save the lives of other children.
She said with her birth, misconceptions about IVF were broken and that many more children would be born.
She said: “I am very grateful to be sent off like this. It is not everybody that gets this opportunity. God has a big hand in this. God was behind me. I want God to use me get more children. I am hoping that through me God will make people see the value of having children. I will specialize in genealogy and obstetrics.
Hannatu’s father Hosea Kupchi, said: “We had 13 years of marriage without a child and we went through the orthodox method without any success. But along the line, my sister in law told me that there is one Dr. Wada that has been helping couples. That is how we came.
“Then challenges came again on how to let the world know that we achieved this feat locally here. There are a lot of couples out there that are not ready to speak out. One, there is issue of stigmatization.

Al Shabaab militants attack AU base in Somalia
Al Shabaab militants attacked an African Union (AU) base in southern
Somalia early on Tuesday, the Islamist group and residents said, with
unconfirmed reports that dozens of AU soldiers were killed.
The al Qaeda-aligned militants said one of their fighters rammed a car bomb into the base and then gunmen poured inside the facility run by the AU peacekeeping mission in Somalia.
Al Shabaab said 50 peacekeepers were killed in the attack on Janale base, about 90 km (55 miles) south of the capital, Mogadishu. In the past, the group has exaggerated the number of troops it has killed and officials have played down losses.
“Now Janale base of AMISOM is under our control,” Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, Al Shabaab’s military operations spokesman, told Reuters.
Captain Bilow Idow, a Somali military officer based in a town near Janale, said the base was effectively cut off as the militants had destroyed a nearby bridge.
“No reinforcement can reach there,” Idow said. “There is much death and damage.”
AMISOM and government officials could not be reached for comment but nearby residents confirmed the attack.
“After morning prayers we heard a big explosion followed by heavy gunfire in the AMISOM base. We do not have further details as we are indoors,” resident Ahmed Olow said.

This 6 year old is obsessed with tearing things and eating them
Little Harry Burlton is quite literally eating his mother out of house and home - by munching his way through carpets, wallpaper and even his bed. Zoe Burlton, 24, has been forced to buy new flooring for her living room because Harry, six, has an obsession with tearing things into little pieces and eating them.
The autistic youngster rips wallpaper down, peels paint from the walls and pulls mattresses apart.
Now his mum is fundraising to build him a 'safespace' with soft surfaces so tough he cannot tear them up.
Zoe, of Paulton, Somerset, said: 'We moved into this house about a year and a half ago and as soon as the carpets were down he started pulling them apart.
'We had to put nails in the carpets to stop him.
'But he has still managed to rip it apart. He finds little threads on it
that he pulls up and then he eats chunks. He properly eats and swallows
them down.
'We have to get a new one now. I can't even just laminate the floor
because he has picked bits off of my mum's laminate and made holes
wherever the lines join up.
'We used to have wallpaper but he peeled it. After we took all of that
off the wall he started going for the paint on the skirting boards.
'He picked little bits off and ate them. There are quite large patches of paint missing.
'He doesn't eat food much but he eats everything else.'
Harry has a developmental age of one, cannot communicate at all and has no understanding of what he does.
He has no interest in children's toys but fiddles with wires, plugs and other hazardous items.
Harry was born 'normal' but Zoe noticed something was wrong when he reached ten months and could not sit up.
He was diagnosed with autism six months ago and has recently learned to
walk, but uses a wheelchair for long distances and cannot speak at all.
As well as having a fascination with carpets, wallpaper and paint, Harry also tears into mattresses, duvets and anything else he can get his hands on.
'He managed to rip up a mattress once,' said Zoe. 'I was in bed and when I checked on him he was still asleep.
'He must have woken up at some point because when I went to check him later there were loads of bits of mattress everywhere.
'He had bits all over his face so I could tell he had eaten some. He got ill after that for a couple of days.
'He also ripped up a brand new quilt yesterday. I went up to check on
him and he had all the fluff out of it and it looked like it had been
snowing.
'If he has something to rip up he will. He just likes to turn stuff into tiny bits so he can run it through his fingers.

'Even just taking him out in the garden is difficult. I have to watch
anything he picks up because he eats the grass, mud and little stones.
'He can eat things just fine but he can't tell me when he is unwell, he
just cries and I have to take him to the doctor because I don't know
what's wrong. It worries me.'
Zoe is redecorating at the moment in the hope of making the house safer
and aims to provide her son with a 'safespace' - a padded room within a
room.
The safespace will be made of soft, blue padded walls that Harry will
not be able to tear or hurt himself on if he throws his body at them
when he is upset.
Zoe is a full-time carer for Harry and her daughter Eva, two, who is
also being investigated for autism. She has raised £900 towards her
£8,000 target so far.
'All of it means that Harry will be safe at night. No matter how long it
takes to raise this money, this safespace is for the rest of his life,'
she said.
'He just needs to be safe. I never know what he is going to eat or do.
'When he is upset he can be a danger to himself because he rocks and
cries and throws himself to the floor, so this would stop him from being
able to hurt himself.
'He also wakes up in the night and it would be so reassuring to know that when he does wake up he is completely safe.
'It will be such a safer and comfier place for him to sleep and it will also mean more sleep for me.'

Tutenkhamun's eggplant was erect when he was mummified so he would look like a god
The world's most famous mummy, Tutenkhamun, was buried with his penis standing at a 90 degree angle. Now experts believe that his everlasting erection was made to make King Tut look like Osiris, the god of the afterlife.
According to Egyptologist Salima Ikram, professor at the American University in Cairo, it was to counter efforts by his father King Akjenaten to establish a religion of one god.
King Tut had, however, worked to reverse his father's ideology and return Egypt to the traditional worshipping of several gods.
Professor Ikram believes he was buried with his erect manhood in a bit to continue his endeavour even in death. The upright penis actually broke off after the discovery of the tomb, amid speculation it was stolen.
